Maximum people care about engine oil, coolant , Mileage, Engine noise. And we regularly check these things so we can save our vehicle life. But maximum people left out the wheel by just checking the air pressure. Wheels are the only point of contact between your vehicle and road. We drive through rough roads, pot holes on daily basis. Shouldn’t its in the priorty list to check and notice wheels everyday? Our Car wheels are designed to stay in a particular angle. If the suspension and steering systems do not operate at their designated angles it will invite the Allignment problems. We have to make sure to check our Alignment after every 6-8000 Km. Wheel allignment is must for the safe and stesy performance of your vehicle. Proper wheel alignment reduce the rolling , friction and wear.

Angles of Wheel in Easy language

  •  All the four wheels should be targeted straight ahead,
  • They should be parallel to their opposite wheels,
  • Wheels should be perpendicular to the road and perpendicular to their respective axles

There are 3 positions of Camber angle: Positive Camber, neutral Camber and  negative camber.Camber is a measured through the perpendicular line of your wheel to the road. It is expressed in degrees

Neutral or Zero camber angle

When a wheel is aligned totally at perpendicular line to road, Its called Zero camber angle. But Zero camble is not recommended at all as it will deflect after load is put on.

Positive Camber angle

If the top of wheel is outward and base is inward, its the positive camber. So this is not at all recommended in any car as it will decrease the handling capability.

Negative Camber

It is the angle when the top of the wheel  is slightly inwards. Negative camber is totally depend upon the suspension. It can be differ from -0.3 to 1 degree.

Ball Joints ,wheel-suspension parts and  worn bearing contribute to camber misalignment.

Caster Angle

Like Camber , Caster angle also have 3 positions. Negative , positive and Zero. Positive caster is when the steering axis is in front of the verticle Positive caster angles run between 3 – 5° on modern vehicles

Negative caster is angle when the steering axis is behind the vertical. Negative Caster was used in old vehicles . Due to change in suspension and chasis designs modern day vehicle avoid the negative.

So Caster angle is responsible for steering, stability, and cornering. Ideally, it’s the angle of your steering axis when its viewed from the side of your Car.

Toe Angle

Toe angle is viewed from the top. When we observe it from above it can be seen in inward ot outward direction. Usually we measure toe in degrees and is generally a fraction of a whole degree. It has effects on tire wear and steering. Excessive toe angle can lead to feathering in wheel.

Additionally to set all these angles on their particular place is called wheel allignment. Its done through advance machinery so that human error can be avoided. If we do wheel allignment on regular interval it will increase the life and performance of wheel.
